The REX are celebrating with a ‘Silents Weekend’ from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd December.
In partnership with the BFI and South West Silents we will be screening 11 silent movies, 6 with live accompaniment from top musicians Meg Morley and Dominic Irving.
Our films have been selected to show the excellent work of Hollywood stars and couple Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks:
Mary Pickford, a multifaceted pioneer of early cinema: a talented performer, a creative producer and a savvy businesswoman who helped shape the film industry as we know it today. Mary Pickford rose to steadily to fame at a time when there was no path to follow to become one of the most popular actresses of the 1910s and 1920s, earning the nickname "Queen of the Movies".
In the 1920s Douglas Fairbanks was the King of Hollywood. His daring stunts fascinated audiences. His clean-cut looks and good-naturedness gave him a glow on screen, and his talents for film making and business would make him one of the greats in Hollywood History
