Stop Press

It has been a while, but we are thrilled to announce that the Rex doors are about to reopen and we can welcome you all back to enjoy the magic of the big screen on Friday, 28th May.

Our projector is up and running and our team of wonderful volunteers is poised and ready to greet you. We can't wait to share with you our new refurbishments which have significantly increased access within the cinema, thanks to your support and generosity.

Our May programme launches with the multi-Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe winning Nomadland (cert 12A), and our favourite bunny returns in Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, (cert U).

Chloé Zhao’s 'Nomadland' was the big winner of the BAFTAs this year, with 4 wins - Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Frances McDormand won the award for Leading Actress. Zhao dedicated the award to the nomadic community, but also in her speech, encouraged people to see her film, and all films, on the big screen in a cinema, as there is nothing like it.

As a dedicated team that runs a cherished independent cinema, we couldn't agree more. Film consumption is changing and features have been catapulted onto more platforms than ever, but seeing a film on a TV or small screen we believe, does not compare to seeing a feature in full cinemascope on the big screen.

Films are a shared experience, enhanced by the atmosphere and anticipation of taking your seat in the auditorium amidst excited chatter, and waiting for the lights to dim as the sounds fade to silence. The thick velvet curtain swishes open and the silence is punctuated with the familiar booming music of the trailers that we all know and love, and the darkness is pierced with bright lights. When you see a film on the big screen in full Cinemascope with Dolby 7.1 surround sound, in an iconic, 100 year old Art Deco cinema, you know you are experiencing something very special.

Our dedicated volunteers are passionate about the Rex because we all enjoy sharing this beautiful building, full of history and stories of Lawrence of Arabia. But we also all love film and escaping into other worlds, and to be able to bring cinematic experiences to the doorsteps of our valued local community is a wonderful thing.

Your safety and the safety of our volunteers is paramount, and we have taken every precaution to protect you when you visit. Why not watch our animated trailer above which will tell you about everything we are doing to keep you safe at the Rex?

The Rex Cinema would like to acknowledge the kindness and generosity of all those who have made our refurbishment possible, including the BFI, The Talbot Village Trust, The Coop, Original Style Tiles, Sainsbury’s, Rotary Club of Wareham, Wareham Lions and many other groups and individuals.

Our warm welcome awaits you.

With best wishes from

The Rex Team
